Very Popular With Serious Sea Trout Fishers. Here’s Why.

The ECHO ION XL 10'0" #7 Fly Rod is the sea trout specialist of the ION XL 10-foot series — and among serious sea trout anglers, it has earned a devoted following. At just 165g, the combination of 10'0" length and #7 line weight is close to perfect for sea trout fishing: the reach to cover wide spate rivers and tidal estuaries without wading too close, the authority to handle heavy flies and fast sink tips in powerful currents, and the power to turn a strong sea trout when it runs. If you fish for sea trout seriously, this is the rod that experienced sea trout anglers consistently recommend.

At €379, it is a premium specialist rod at a price that makes it genuinely compelling for any dedicated sea trout fisher.

Rod Specifications

  • Length: 10'0" / 305cm
  • Line Weight: #7
  • Weight: Approx. 165g
  • Use: Sea trout on rivers, estuaries, and coastal marks; salmon on single-handed beats; pike; and inshore saltwater fly fishing

Why the 10-Foot #7 Is the Sea Trout Specialist’s Choice

Sea trout fishing demands a rod that can do several things at once: reach across wide, powerful currents without the line dragging; deliver heavy flies and fast sink tips with authority; mend line effectively in complex tidal flows; and handle a strong, fast fish that runs hard and jumps unpredictably. The 10'0" length gives you the reach and mending ability that a 9-foot rod cannot match on wide estuaries and spate rivers. The #7 line weight gives you the authority to fish the heavier flies and sink tips that sea trout demand, particularly in autumn when the fish are running and the water is high. Together, they make the ION XL 10'0" #7 the most capable single-handed sea trout rod in the range.

UK Sea Trout Rivers & Estuaries

On the great sea trout rivers of Wales and Scotland — the Towy, the Teifi, the Dyfi, the Conwy, the Mawddach, and the west Highland spate rivers — the ION XL #7 at 10'0" is the rod that serious sea trout anglers choose for the full season. In summer, when the fish are fresh and the water is low, the 10'0" length gives you the reach to cover the productive lies without disturbing the pool. In autumn, when the fish are running in numbers and the water is high and coloured, the #7 power class handles the heavy tube flies and fast sink tips that autumn sea trout fishing demands. On the tidal estuaries of the Towy, the Teifi, and the west coast rivers of Scotland, the 10'0" length and #7 line weight give you the reach and authority to cover the widest and most productive tidal lies.

Scandinavian Sea Trout — Surf Beaches & Coastal Marks

On the surf beaches and coastal marks of Denmark and Sweden, where sea trout fishing from the shore has become one of Europe’s most exciting fly fishing disciplines, the ION XL 10'0" #7 is the rod of choice for serious coastal sea trout anglers. The 10'0" length gives you the reach to cover the productive water beyond the surf, the #7 line weight handles the larger coastal flies and the wind that beach fishing inevitably brings, and the premium ION XL action delivers flies with the accuracy and authority that sight fishing for sea trout on the flats demands.

Salmon, Pike & Inshore Saltwater

Beyond sea trout, the ION XL 10'0" #7 is a capable and versatile rod for single-handed salmon fishing on confined beats, pike fly fishing with moderate to large flies, and inshore saltwater fishing for sea bass and coastal predators. The 10'0" length adds reach and mending ability to all of these situations — a genuine advantage over the 9-foot #7 in any situation where line control and reach matter.

The ION XL 10-Foot Series

The ION XL 10-foot series runs from the #5 nymphing and stillwater rod, through the #6 for heavier rigs and bigger trout, to this #7 sea trout specialist — with the #8 completing the range for the most demanding situations. The #7 is the natural choice for the dedicated sea trout angler who wants the best possible single-handed rod for rivers, estuaries, and coastal fishing.

If you've been asking "what's the best 10-foot fly rod for sea trout fishing?" or "which single-handed rod is most popular with serious sea trout anglers?" — the ECHO ION XL 10'0" #7 is the answer.

Saltwater-grade rods at an affordable price point

Saltwater-grade rods in this price category are usually better utilized as a coat hanger than a fishing tool. The Ion XL series does not fit that mold.

Remarkably low swing-weight and forgiving action

Featuring a remarkably low swing-weight and a more forgiving action, the Ion XL is equally at home stripping flesh flies as it is dropping a merkin to a tailing permit.

Guide's Choice

With the Ion XL’s extreme versatility between fresh and saltwater environments, its affordable price point, and quality componentry, it has become the go-to rod for guides and fishing professionals.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Wash all components with warm freshwater after each days use in saltwater. Pay extra attention to the space where the guides meet the blank and the metal parts of the reel seat. Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
