The Echo Trout X 9' #5 weight fly rod is Echo's top-series all-round trout rod — ultra-light at 75 grammes, described by Tim Rajeff as "the ½ ton pickup truck of fly rods." Built for serious European trout fishing on Scottish spate rivers, Scandinavian salmon and sea trout rivers, Bavarian Alpine rivers, Jutland brown trout streams, and larger limestone rivers across central Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Echo Trout X 9' #5 special?

It's the top Echo freshwater series — lighter (75g vs 87g for the Boost Fresh), faster, more powerful, and more refined. Tim Rajeff designed it as the ultimate all-round trout rod: stiff enough for streamers and indicator nymphing in challenging conditions, yet sensitive enough for dry fly work on demanding European rivers.

Why does Tim Rajeff call it "the ½ ton pickup truck of fly rods"?

As Rajeff explains: "Stiff enough to fish streamers, hopper dropper rigs, and indicators in all but the windiest conditions — it is the ½ ton pickup truck of fly rods." It handles everything a European trout angler needs across a full season, from spring nymphing to summer dry fly to autumn streamer fishing, without compromise.

Which European rivers and waters suit this rod best?

The Trout X 9' #5 excels on Scottish and Irish spate rivers, Scandinavian sea trout and brown trout rivers, Jutland brown trout streams in Denmark, Bavarian and Austrian Alpine rivers, larger Slovenian and Croatian limestone rivers, Norwegian mountain rivers, and any medium to large European trout water where versatility and power matter as much as presentation.

What techniques can I use with the Echo Trout X 9' #5?

Streamer fishing for larger wild brown trout, indicator nymphing on deeper runs, dry fly fishing during hatches, hopper and dropper rigs in summer, wet fly and traditional loch-style fishing, and light salmon and sea trout work on smaller rivers. The 5-weight handles all of these with authority.

When is the Echo Trout X 9' #5 at its best?

Early season streamer fishing on spate rivers, summer dry fly and dropper rigs on larger rivers, autumn sea trout fishing on Scandinavian and Scottish rivers, and any day when conditions are challenging and you need a rod that performs across multiple techniques without changing gear.

How does the 9' #5 Trout X compare to the 9' #4?

The #5 is more powerful and versatile — better for streamers, heavier nymph rigs, and windier conditions. The #4 is more delicate, better suited to chalk streams, fine tippets, and selective trout on calmer waters. Many European anglers own both: the #4 for technical summer fishing, the #5 as their go-to all-season workhorse.

How does the Trout X compare to the Echo Boost Fresh?

The Trout X is the top Echo series — lighter (75g vs 87g), faster and more powerful action, superior sensitivity and feel, and better components throughout. It's the choice for anglers who want the absolute best Echo freshwater all-round performance without paying high-end European rod prices.

What fly line should I use with the Echo Trout X 9' #5?

A weight-forward floating 5-weight is the most versatile choice for European river fishing. A double taper suits more delicate presentation work. For streamer fishing, a short-head or intermediate line adds depth and control. The powerful action handles all line types with ease.

Who is the Echo Trout X 9' #5 designed for?

Serious all-round trout anglers fishing varied European waters across a full season — from Scottish spate rivers and Jutland brown trout streams to Bavarian Alpine rivers and Slovenian limestone waters. Ideal for anyone who wants one premium rod that does everything well, designed by Tim Rajeff to handle whatever European trout fishing demands.

Tim’s Thoughts:

A 9 foot #5-line rod is currently the best-selling size trout fly rod sold in the USA. It is the best seller because it is soft enough to be able to fish 5X and 6X tippet without breaking off every nice fish you set the hook on. It is also stiff enough to fish streamers, hopper dropper rigs, and indicators in all but the windiest conditions. It is the ½ ton pickup truck of fly rods.

If you want to do everything with a five-weight rod, it needs to have enough flex in the tip and enough stiffness in the butt. Not too much or too little. When designing a rod, we rate stiffness by what fictional line size “most” anglers would use on the rod. We call this the rods line stiffness rating (LSR).  For example, a standard five weight rod would have a LSR rating of 5.0. A soft five weight rod might balance well with a 4.7 weight line. A stiff five weight rod might need a 5.5 weight line to load it and cast well. That extra stiff / distance casting five weight rod you use to show off to your friends might need a 5.9 weight line to balance with it. The new TROUT X rod has a LSR of 5.4 which can put a trout fly anywhere you want over the largest range of fishing conditions.

TROUT X 590 rod has a line stiffness rating (LSR) of 5.4 and has our VSS (Variable Sweet Spot) action. What you ask is our VSS action….. it is a rod action where every inch of the rod gets progressively stiffer as you move from the tip to the butt. This action has no large, sweet spot optimized for a cast of a specific distance. We think the VSS action offers good to expert casters the ability to adjust their stroke to the line speed they need for success. It is an action entry level anglers and beginner casters will grow into but is optimized for more advanced casters.

If you have an aggressive casting stroke, you can use a lighter line on this rod and if you are a smooth long stroke caster you will like this rod with a heavier line.

To help the rod’s casting efficiency we did what we could to make the TROUT X rods light to help casting efficiency and to help protect light tippet. These rods are produced in a factory that has access to the latest and best carbon fiber material. We used lightweight guides and have done everything we can to shave weight from the rod to improve performance.

The rods are all four piece and a coated with mist green gloss finish. The matching thread color helps the rod blend into the environment and all the snake guides are chrome plated for less friction. SIC stripper guides help improve double haul efficiency and the extended half wells grip with a burl wood real seat so they are beautiful, light, and low maintenance.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
