The Echo Trout X 9' #6 weight fly rod is Echo's top-series powerhouse — ultra-light at 78 grammes, designed by Tim Rajeff for wind, distance, large flies, and heavy nymph rigs on exposed European trout waters. Built for Scottish and Irish loughs, Norwegian fjord rivers, Baltic sea trout coastlines, large Scandinavian brown trout rivers, and big Alpine reservoirs where conditions demand a rod with authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Echo Trout X 9' #6 special?

It's the top Echo freshwater series — lighter (78g vs 90g for the Boost Fresh), faster, more powerful, and more refined. Tim Rajeff designed it for the conditions that defeat lighter rods: strong winds on exposed loughs and reservoirs, long casts on large rivers, and heavy nymph rigs that require backbone to turn over and control at distance.

Why choose a 6-weight according to Tim Rajeff?

As Rajeff explains: "You grab your six weight when you have wind, need to throw far, are throwing big, heavy flies, or when you are throwing big nymphs and indicator rigs." It's the rod you reach for when conditions are challenging and a lighter line simply won't do the job — the top-series choice for serious European trout and sea trout anglers.

Which European waters suit this rod best?

The Trout X 9' #6 excels on Scottish and Irish loughs in a breeze, Norwegian fjord rivers and large brown trout rivers, Baltic and North Sea coastlines for sea trout, large Scandinavian rivers, Alpine reservoirs in Austria and Switzerland, large Bavarian rivers, and any exposed European water where wind, distance, or large flies are part of the day's fishing.

What techniques work best with the Echo Trout X 9' #6?

Streamer fishing for large wild brown trout and sea trout, heavy nymph rigs with indicators on deep runs, large sedge and daddy-long-legs imitations on loughs and reservoirs, loch-style wet fly fishing from a drifting boat, distance casting on large rivers, and coastal sea trout fishing on Baltic and Atlantic shorelines.

When is the Echo Trout X 9' #6 at its best?

Autumn sea trout fishing on Scandinavian and Baltic coastlines, summer lough fishing in a stiff westerly with daddy-long-legs on the surface, streamer fishing on large Norwegian and Scottish rivers in early season, and any day when wind and distance make a lighter rod a liability rather than an asset.

How does the Trout X 9' #6 compare to the 9' #5?

The #6 is more powerful — better in wind, more authority at distance, and better suited to large flies and heavy nymph rigs. The #5 is more versatile for mixed technique fishing on medium rivers. Choose the #6 when conditions are demanding and power matters; choose the #5 as your all-round workhorse on calmer, more varied waters.

How does the Trout X compare to the Echo Boost Fresh?

The Trout X is the top Echo series — lighter (78g vs 90g), faster and more powerful action, superior sensitivity and feel, and better components throughout. It's the choice for anglers who want the absolute best Echo freshwater performance without paying high-end European rod prices.

What fly line should I use with the Echo Trout X 9' #6?

A weight-forward floating 6-weight is the most versatile choice for lough, reservoir, and river fishing. An intermediate line suits sea trout and streamer work in the surface film. A short-head line maximises distance on large rivers. The powerful action handles all line types with ease and authority.

Who is the Echo Trout X 9' #6 designed for?

Lough and reservoir anglers, sea trout specialists, streamer fishers targeting large wild brown trout, and any angler who regularly fishes exposed European waters where wind, distance, and large flies are part of the challenge. Ideal for anyone upgrading to a premium 6-weight designed by Tim Rajeff for the demanding conditions of northern and central European trout fishing.

Tim’s Thoughts:

When do you use a six-weight rod for trout? Is it to throw small flies on a calm day? F*** no! You grab your six weight when you have wind, need to throw far, are throwing big, heavy flies, or when you are throwing big nymphs + indicator rigs. In almost every one of these situations, you want a firm six weight but not one that is overly stiff so you can initiate a cast and still feel the rod load. We chose to give the TROUT X 690, nine-foot six weight rod a line stiffness rating (LSR) of 6.5.

TROUT X 690 rod has a line stiffness rating (LSR) of 6.5 and has our VSS (Variable Sweet Spot) action. What you ask is our VSS action….. it is a rod action where every inch of the rod gets progressively stiffer as you move from the tip to the butt. This action has no large, sweet spot optimized for a cast of a specific distance. We think the VSS action offers good to expert casters the ability to adjust their stroke to the line speed they need for success. It is an action entry level anglers and beginner casters will grow into but is optimized for more advanced casters. If you have an aggressive casting stroke, you can use a lighter line on this rod and if you are a smooth long stroke caster you will like this rod with a heavier line.

To help the rod’s casting efficiency we did what we could to make the TROUT X rods light to help casting efficiency and to help protect light tippet. These rods are produced in a factory that has access to the latest and best carbon fiber material. We used lightweight guides and have done everything we can to shave weight from the rod to improve performance.

The rods are all four piece and a coated with mist green gloss finish. The matching thread color helps the rod blend into the environment and all the snake guides are chrome plated for less friction. SIC stripper guides help improve double haul efficiency and the extended half wells grip with a burl wood real seat so they are beautiful, light, and low maintenance.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
