The All-Round Saltwater EPR. Fast Action at Its Most Versatile.

The ECHO EPR 9'0" #9 Fly Rod is the all-round saltwater workhorse of the ECHO EPR range — and for many saltwater fly fishers, it will be the most used rod in the collection. The #9 line weight is the sweet spot of serious saltwater fly fishing, and in the hands of the EPR's extremely fast action it becomes the most versatile and capable fast action saltwater rod in the range. Powerful enough for larger flats species and demanding inshore situations, precise enough for sight fishing on the flats, and fast enough to cut through any coastal wind with authority — at €699, it is the EPR that covers the widest range of saltwater situations without compromise.

Rod Specifications

  • Length: 9'0" / 274cm
  • Line Weight: #9
  • Action: Extremely fast
  • Use: All-round inshore saltwater and flats fly fishing — permit, bonefish, tarpon, sea bass, GT in shallower water, and European coastal species

The Fast Action Advantage at #9

The #9 line weight demands a rod that can do everything well — deliver large flies quickly to sighted fish, cut through coastal winds with a tight loop, handle strong fish in powerful tidal currents, and remain comfortable to fish all day on the flats or a coastal mark. The EPR's extremely fast action addresses every one of these demands with exceptional efficiency. The tight loop and high line speed of the EPR #9 give you the ability to make long, accurate casts with minimum false casting — a critical advantage when a permit or tarpon appears at distance and you have seconds to deliver the fly. And because the fast action loads and unloads so efficiently, the rod remains comfortable to fish all day without the fatigue that a heavier, slower action rod can bring.

Tropical Flats — Permit, Bonefish & Tarpon

On the tropical saltwater flats of the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific, the EPR #9 is the fast action rod for the angler who wants the best possible tool for permit, bonefish on larger flats, and light tarpon. For permit — the most demanding target in flats fly fishing — the EPR's fast action delivers heavy crab patterns quickly and accurately to sighted fish, with the minimum false casting that permit demand. For light tarpon, the #9 line weight and extremely fast action give you the power to deliver large tarpon flies with authority and set the hook through a tarpon's bony jaw with the speed that a fast action rod uniquely provides.

European Inshore Saltwater — Sea Bass & Coastal Species

On the saltwater coasts of the British Isles and Europe, the EPR #9 is the premium fast action rod for sea bass from estuaries and rocky marks, dorade and sea bass on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Spain and Portugal, and the full range of European inshore saltwater species. The extremely fast action cuts through coastal winds with authority, delivering large saltwater flies with the line speed and accuracy that sight fishing and close-range coastal casting demand — and the #9 power class gives you the authority to handle the strongest fish in the most demanding tidal conditions.

GT in Shallower Water

For giant trevally on the edges of the flats and in shallower water, the EPR #9 gives you the fast action precision to deliver large GT flies quickly and accurately to sighted fish, with the power to make an impression on one of the most aggressive and powerful species in saltwater fly fishing.

The ECHO EPR Range

The EPR is ECHO's premium extremely fast action rod range, available from #6 through to #12. The #9 is the all-round saltwater workhorse of the range — the natural choice for the saltwater fly fisher who wants the EPR's premium fast action performance across the widest variety of inshore and flats situations. Above the #9, the range continues through the #10, #11, and #12 for progressively more powerful big game saltwater applications.

If you've been asking "what's the best extremely fast action #9 fly rod for saltwater and flats fishing?" or "which premium fast action saltwater rod is most versatile for permit and inshore fishing?" — the ECHO EPR 9'0" #9 is the answer.

A rod for big flies, big fish and big winds

Big game fisheries require a rod that can handle the big stuff.  Whether it’s casting chicken-sized pike or muskie flies, fighting heavy winds, or dealing with the fury of a GT, the EPR has delivered.

Extra-fast action and massive power

With its super-fast tip, it will load for short distance shots.  When it’s distance or heavy lifting you need to do, its powerful bottom section will more than deliver the goods.

ECHO's fastest, most powerful rod they have ever produced

Working with bass and muskie USA guru Pat Ehlers, ECHO produced their fastest, most powerful rod we have ever produced.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Wash all components with warm freshwater after each days use in saltwater. Pay extra attention to the space where the guides meet the blank and the metal parts of the reel seat. Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
