The Switch Rod That Means Business

The ECHO Swing Switch 11'8" #8 Fly Rod bridges the gap between a trout Spey outfit and a full salmon Spey rod — and it does so with the kind of effortless versatility that makes it one of the most practical two-handed rods available for European river fishing. At 11'8", it has the length to cover wide pools and swing flies through deep, productive lies, while the #8 line weight gives it the authority to handle sea trout, Baltic salmon, and the kind of fish that demand a rod with genuine backbone.

At €429, it represents outstanding value for a switch rod of this capability — a rod that will serve you faithfully from the sea trout rivers of Denmark to the salmon beats of Norway and the Baltic tributaries of northern Germany.

The European Sea Trout & Salmon Switch Rod

Switch rods occupy a uniquely practical position in European fly fishing. On the night rivers of Jutland, where sea trout run hard through summer and autumn, an 11'8" switch rod lets you cover the water with Scandi or Skagit heads without the full commitment of a 13–14' double-hander. On the salmon rivers of Norway, Sweden, and the Baltic coast, it gives you the reach and line control to swing flies through the productive seams and holding lies that longer rods can sometimes overpower.

The dual grip design means you can fish it two-handed for distance and line control, or drop to a single-handed grip for close-in work and precise presentation — a genuine tactical advantage across a full day on the river.

Line Pairing

The Swing Switch #8 loads beautifully with Scandi shooting heads in the 300–360gr range and lighter Skagit heads for heavier flies and sink tips. It is equally at home with a dedicated switch line for all-round versatility on mixed beats.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ECHO Swing Switch 11'8" #8?

The ECHO Swing Switch 11'8" (360cm) #8 is the most powerful rod in the ECHO Swing Switch range. It is a medium fast action two-handed switch rod weighing approximately 224g, designed for sea trout and Atlantic salmon fishing on European rivers. It bridges the gap between a trout Spey outfit and a full salmon Spey rod.

How does the #8 compare to the #6 and #7 in the Swing Switch series?

The #6 is the lightest rod, suited to trout Spey and grayling fishing on intimate European rivers. The #7 is the versatile all-rounder for mixed European river fishing. The #8 is the most powerful — the choice for sea trout and Atlantic salmon on larger rivers, for heavier flies and sink tips, and for the most demanding European river conditions. Choose the #8 when power and authority are the priority.

What rivers is the ECHO Swing Switch #8 suited to?

The #8 Swing Switch is ideally suited to the sea trout rivers of Jutland and the Baltic coast, the salmon rivers of Norway and Sweden, the Baltic tributaries of northern Germany and Poland, and any European river where a powerful switch rod is preferred over a full double-handed Spey setup. It excels wherever the #7 feels underpowered — larger fish, heavier flies, and stronger currents.

Can the Swing Switch #8 be used for Atlantic salmon fishing?

Yes — the #8 Swing Switch is well suited to Atlantic salmon fishing on smaller to medium-sized salmon rivers where a switch rod is preferred over a full Spey setup. The 11'8" length provides the reach and mending ability needed to cover productive lies, and the #8 power handles the heavier flies and sink tips that salmon fishing demands.

Is the ECHO Swing Switch 11'8" #8 available with worldwide shipping?

Yes — the ECHO Swing Switch 11'8" #8 is available from Balticflyfisher with worldwide shipping. Balticflyfisher is your specialist source for European sea trout and salmon fly fishing tackle.

Further Details

Have your cake and eat it, too!  The ECHO Swing Trout-Spey, Switch and Spey rods feature crisp actions and perfect power to fit a wide range of casting strokes and fishing situations without breaking the bank.  Unique switch rod sizes are dialed in for real fishing situations where you need serious backbone but don’t have the space for a full-sized spey.  The Trout-Spey is new for 2024. Swinging, skating or chucking bobbers for trout, sea trout or salmon, the new Swing is ready to play.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Do not use tape on your ferrules.

Action/Power Comparison Chart

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
