The Most Powerful Rod in the 10-Foot ION XL Series. Built for Big Water.

The ECHO ION XL 10'0" #8 Fly Rod is the most powerful rod in the ION XL 10-foot series — and it was built for the biggest and most demanding situations that a 10-foot single-handed rod can face. At 184g, it combines the reach and line control of the 10'0" length with the authority of a #8 line weight, making it the definitive choice for big water salmon nymphing, pike from a boat or belly boat, and any situation where maximum power and maximum reach are needed at the same time.

At €379, it is outstanding value for a rod of this power and capability — and a genuinely specialist tool that does things no other rod in the ION XL range can do.

Rod Specifications

  • Length: 10'0" / 305cm
  • Line Weight: #8
  • Weight: Approx. 184g
  • Use: Big water salmon nymphing, pike from a boat or belly boat, large sea trout, and demanding inshore saltwater fly fishing

Big Water Salmon Nymphing — A Specialist Technique

Salmon nymphing on big water is one of the most demanding and rewarding techniques in single-handed fly fishing — and the ION XL 10'0" #8 is the rod that makes it possible. On the great salmon rivers of Scotland and Norway — the Tay, the Spey, the Tweed, the Gaula, the Namsen — where the pools are wide, the currents are powerful, and the fish lie deep, the combination of 10'0" reach and #8 authority gives you the ability to fish heavy nymphs and weighted flies at depth with the line control and mending ability that big water demands. The 10'0" length holds more line off the water than a 9-foot rod, reducing drag and extending the natural drift of the fly through the productive zone. The #8 power class handles the heaviest nymphs and the fastest sink tips with authority. Together, they make the ION XL 10'0" #8 the most capable single-handed salmon nymphing rod in the range.

Pike from a Boat or Belly Boat

For pike fly fishing from a boat or belly boat on European rivers and lakes, the ION XL 10'0" #8 is the definitive choice. The 10'0" length gives you the reach to cover the water around the boat without repositioning, the #8 power class handles the largest pike flies with ease, and the extra length makes roll casting and single-handed Spey casts from a seated position significantly more effective than a 9-foot rod. On the great pike lakes and rivers of Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia, and central Europe, where boat fishing for pike on the fly is a serious and growing discipline, the ION XL 10'0" #8 is the rod that experienced pike fly fishers choose.

Large Sea Trout & Inshore Saltwater

The #8 power class and 10'0" length also make this rod a formidable choice for large sea trout on wide estuaries and tidal rivers, and for inshore saltwater fishing where maximum reach and authority are needed. On the tidal estuaries of the great sea trout rivers of Wales and Scotland, and on the surf beaches of Denmark and Sweden where large sea trout are targeted from the shore, the 10'0" #8 gives you the reach and power to cover the widest and most productive water with the largest flies.

The ION XL 10-Foot Series — The Pinnacle

The ION XL 10-foot series runs from the #5 nymphing and stillwater rod, through the #6 for heavier rigs and bigger trout, the #7 sea trout specialist, to this #8 — the most powerful and most specialist rod in the series. If you need the authority of a 10-foot #8 for big water salmon nymphing, pike from a boat, or the most demanding inshore saltwater situations, this is the rod that completes the range.

If you've been asking "what's the best 10-foot fly rod for salmon nymphing on big rivers?" or "which #8 fly rod is best for pike fishing from a boat or belly boat?" — the ECHO ION XL 10'0" #8 is the answer.

Saltwater-grade rods at an affordable price point

Saltwater-grade rods in this price category are usually better utilized as a coat hanger than a fishing tool. The Ion XL series does not fit that mold.

Remarkably low swing-weight and forgiving action

Featuring a remarkably low swing-weight and a more forgiving action, the Ion XL is equally at home stripping flesh flies as it is dropping a merkin to a tailing permit.

Guide's Choice

With the Ion XL’s extreme versatility between fresh and saltwater environments, its affordable price point, and quality componentry, it has become the go-to rod for guides and fishing professionals.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Wash all components with warm freshwater after each days use in saltwater. Pay extra attention to the space where the guides meet the blank and the metal parts of the reel seat. Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
