More Power. More Reach. More Fish.

The ECHO Shadow 2 10'6" #4 Fly Rod is the most powerful and longest rod in the Shadow 2 nymphing range — and it was built for a very specific purpose: the moments when you need more. More power for bigger rivers and heavier nymphs. More reach to cover the widest lies without wading closer. More authority to handle the larger fish that big water holds. At 96g and 10'6", it is the Shadow 2 that experienced Euro nymphers reach for when the river is wide, the current is strong, and the fish are large.

At €459, it is outstanding value for a rod of this capability — and a genuinely compelling choice for any angler who fishes big rivers and wants a Euro nymphing rod with the power to match them.

Important note on line matching: When pairing any ECHO Shadow 2 nymph rod with a non-specialist nymph line, we recommend uplining — for example, use a #5 line on this #4 rod. This ensures the rod loads correctly and performs at its best with standard fly lines.

Rod Specifications

  • Length: 10'6" / 323cm
  • Line Weight: #4 (upline to #5 with non-specialist lines)
  • Weight: Approx. 96g
  • Use: Euro nymphing, Czech nymphing, and tight line nymphing on big rivers with heavier nymphs and larger fish

When You Need More Power

The #3 Shadow 2 is the all-round Euro nymphing rod — versatile, capable, and the natural starting point for most anglers. The #4 is the rod for when the #3 reaches its limits: on the biggest and fastest rivers, where heavier nymphs are needed to reach the productive zone and where the fish are large enough to demand a rod with genuine authority. The extra power of the #4 line weight allows you to fish heavier tungsten bead nymphs more effectively, turn larger fish away from snags and fast water, and maintain control through the fight in a way that a lighter rod cannot.

The 10'6" length adds the extra reach that big river nymphing demands — the ability to cover lies that the 10'0" rod cannot quite reach without wading closer and disturbing the fish. On wide, powerful rivers, that extra six inches of reach makes a meaningful difference to how much water you can fish effectively.

UK & European Big Rivers — Trout & Grayling

On the larger wild brown trout and grayling rivers of the British Isles — the lower Eden, the Wye in its broader reaches, the Usk, the Ribble, the Aire, the Tay tributaries, and the bigger chalk stream carriers — the Shadow 2 #4 is the rod for the angler who wants to fish the Euro nymph with authority on the widest and most demanding beats. The #4 power class handles the heavier nymphs and faster currents that big river fishing demands, while the 10'6" length gives you the reach to cover the water without disturbing it.

On the larger limestone rivers of Austria, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic, and the bigger grayling rivers of Scandinavia, the Shadow 2 #4 is the rod for the angler who wants to fish the technique that these rivers were made for, with the power to do it properly.

For grayling fishing in autumn and winter on big, powerful rivers — when the fish are deep in the fastest water, the nymphs need to be heavy, and the takes are hard-won — the #4 Shadow 2 gives you the authority to fish effectively in the most demanding conditions of the season.

The Shadow 2 Range — Choosing Your Rod

The Shadow 2 is available in three configurations: the 10'0" #2 for sensitive small stream nymphing, the 10'0" #3 as the go-to all-round Euro nymphing rod, and this 10'6" #4 for big rivers and larger fish. If you are unsure which to choose, the #3 is the natural starting point for most anglers. If you fish primarily on big, powerful rivers and want a rod with the power to match them, the #4 is the one.

If you've been asking "what's the best Euro nymphing rod for big rivers and large trout?" or "which #4 tight line nymphing rod is most powerful for UK and European rivers?" — the ECHO Shadow 2 10'6" #4 is the answer.

A Euro Nymph rod for critical line feel & control

Euro Nymphing requires precision and sensitivity to hit the target and feel not only fish biting, but also current seams, the bottom, and anything else that will dictate where to present your fly.

Light, Fast, and Versatile

Strike detection is the make-or-break metric for any Euro Nymphing rod.  The Shadow II’s light weight and fast action tip allow you to feel the subtleties of not just strikes, but bottom contour, current speeds, and other critical variances that can effect your success.

For casual anglers and competition anglers alike

The Shadow II lives in that “Goldilocks zone” between ECHO's other Euro nymphing rods.  Blending enough sensitivity and overall performance with affordability to make it one of the most popular rods in our entire lineup.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
