Irish Rivers — Wild Brown Trout & Sea Trout

Ireland's wild rivers are among the finest trout and sea trout fisheries in the world, and the SR Switch #5 is perfectly matched to them. On the spate rivers of Connemara and the west coast — the Erriff, the Delphi, the Bundorragha — where sea trout run hard through summer and the pools are intimate and tree-lined, the 10'8" length gives you the reach to cover the water without the overhead of a heavier outfit. On the wild brown trout loughs and their feeder streams, the #5 line weight keeps the presentation delicate and the connection to the fly immediate.

On the classic limestone rivers of the Irish midlands and the spate rivers of Cork and Kerry, the SR Switch opens up Spey casting techniques that transform how you fish these waters — covering lies that a single-handed rod cannot reach efficiently, without disturbing the pool.

UK Rivers — Brown Trout & Sea Trout

On the celebrated wild brown trout rivers of Wales, northern England, and Scotland — the Wye, the Eden, the Usk, the Tay tributaries, and the west Highland spate rivers — the SR Switch #5 is in its element. The fast action delivers tight, accurate loops in confined spaces, the 10'8" length gives you the mending ability to fish complex currents effectively, and the #5 line weight keeps the presentation refined enough for the most educated wild fish.

On the smaller sea trout rivers of Wales and Scotland — the Dyfi, the Conwy, the Lune — the #5 is the ideal line weight for clear, low summer water, where a heavier outfit would feel out of place and a lighter presentation makes all the difference.

European Rivers — Trout Spey & Scandi Style

Across Europe, the SR Switch #5 excels on the brown trout rivers of Scandinavia, the limestone streams of Austria and Slovenia, and the clear lowland rivers and streams of northern Germany — anywhere that a long, accurate cast and a delicate fly presentation are the keys to consistent success. On the classic Scandinavian rivers where the Scandi style was born, the fast action loads light shooting heads with a crispness and efficiency that is deeply satisfying to fish.

Fast Action at #5 — Why It Matters

A fast action rod at #5 is an uncommon and special thing. The SR Switch delivers the speed and precision of a performance blank in the most intimate line weight available on a switch rod — keeping the fishing delicate, the tippets fine, and the connection to wild fish as direct as it can be. It rewards anglers who have put in the time on their Spey casting, and it will change how you think about trout Spey fishing.

Pair it with a light Scandi shooting head in the 240–300gr range or a dedicated trout Spey line for all-round versatility on wild trout rivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ECHO SR Switch 10'8" #5?

The ECHO SR Switch 10'8" (329cm) #5 is a fast action two-handed switch rod weighing approximately 180g, designed for wild brown trout and sea trout fishing on Irish, British, and European rivers. A fast action switch rod at #5 is genuinely uncommon — this is a specialist rod for the dedicated trout Spey angler who values performance and delicacy in equal measure.

How does the #5 compare to the #4 and #6 in the SR Switch series?

The #4 is the more intimate rod, suited to the smallest and most demanding rivers where ultimate delicacy is the priority. The #5 steps up with slightly more reach and versatility, covering a wider range of Irish, British, and European trout rivers whilst retaining the refined presentation that defines the lighter end of the SR Switch range. The #6 adds further power for larger rivers and more demanding conditions. The #5 is the most versatile choice for dedicated trout Spey anglers.

What rivers is the ECHO SR Switch #5 suited to?

The #5 SR Switch is ideally suited to the spate rivers of Connemara and the Irish west coast (Erriff, Delphi, Bundorragha), the wild brown trout rivers of Wales, northern England, and Scotland (Wye, Eden, Usk, Tay tributaries), the smaller sea trout rivers of Wales and Scotland (Dyfi, Conwy, Lune), and the limestone streams and brown trout rivers of Austria, Slovenia, and Scandinavia.

Is the SR Switch #5 suitable for beginners to two-handed casting?

The fast action blank rewards anglers who have developed their Spey casting timing. For beginners, the ECHO Swing Switch medium fast range is a more forgiving starting point. For anglers with some Spey casting experience who want to step up to fast action performance, the #5 SR Switch is an excellent and deeply rewarding choice.

Is the ECHO SR Switch 10'8" #5 available with worldwide shipping?

Yes — the ECHO SR Switch 10'8" #5 is available from Balticflyfisher with worldwide shipping. Balticflyfisher is your specialist source for UK, Irish, and European trout Spey and brown trout fly fishing tackle.

Further Details

Fast actions and versatile sizes make the SR series the best rod for two-handed fly casters that prefer a shorter rod. The #3-5 models are ideal for trout and sseatrout everywhere, while the #6-8 handle larger anadromous fish with authority. Slick cosmetics and bombproof componentry help solidify the SR as the fishiest switch rod on the water.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Do not use tape on your ferrules.

Action/Power Comparison Chart

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
