The Most Powerful Rod in the ION XL Range. No Limits.

The ECHO ION XL 9'0" #10 Fly Rod is the most powerful rod in the ION XL range — and it was built for the moments when nothing less will do. The biggest streamers, the biggest salmon, the largest pike — all well within its comfort zone. At 227g, it is a serious single-handed rod with the authority to cast the heaviest flies, handle the most powerful fish, and cover the widest and most demanding water that single-handed fly fishing can take you to. The premium ION XL build quality is here in full measure — and at €379, it is outstanding value for a rod of this power and capability.

Rod Specifications

  • Length: 9'0" / 274cm
  • Line Weight: #10
  • Weight: Approx. 227g
  • Use: Big salmon, large pike, the biggest streamers, and serious saltwater fly fishing

The Biggest Salmon

On the great salmon rivers of Norway and Scotland — the Alta, the Gaula, the Namsen, the Tay, the Spey — the ION XL #10 is the single-handed rod for the angler who wants maximum authority on the biggest beats and in the most demanding conditions. The #10 line weight handles the largest tube flies and the heaviest sink tips that big river salmon fishing demands, and the 9'0" length gives you the precision and accuracy that a longer two-handed rod cannot always provide in confined pools and tight lies. When a large Atlantic salmon takes and runs, the #10 ION XL has the backbone to turn it.

The Largest Pike

For pike fly fishing with the largest articulated flies on European rivers and lakes, the ION XL #10 is the definitive single-handed choice. The #10 power class casts the biggest, most heavily dressed pike flies with ease, handles the wind that pike fishing on open water inevitably brings, and gives you the authority to stop a large pike before it reaches the nearest weed bed. If you fish for pike with large flies and want a single-handed rod that handles them without effort, this is the one.

The Biggest Streamers

For streamer fishing with the largest articulated patterns on big rivers and stillwaters, the #10 ION XL is the rod that makes it effortless. Flies that would overload a lighter rod are delivered with authority and accuracy, cast after cast, without the fatigue that comes from fighting an undergunned outfit. On the big brown trout rivers of Europe and the large stillwaters of the British Isles, the #10 opens up streamer fishing at a scale that lighter rods simply cannot access.

Serious Saltwater Fly Fishing

On the saltwater coasts of Europe and beyond, the ION XL #10 is the rod for the angler who is targeting the largest and most demanding inshore and nearshore species. For large sea bass, tope, and the bigger pelagic species that come within range of the fly fisher on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands, the #10 gives you the power to cast the largest saltwater flies into a coastal wind and handle powerful fish in strong tidal currents. It is also the rod of choice for the travelling saltwater fly fisher heading to destinations where a #10 is the standard — bonefish flats, permit fishing, and tropical saltwater species that demand a rod with genuine authority.

The ION XL Range — The Top of the Range

The ION XL #10 is the pinnacle of the ION XL single-handed range — the rod that the entire range builds towards. From the #6 all-round freshwater rod through the #7, #8, and #9, each step up in line weight adds authority and capability. The #10 is where that progression ends: the most powerful, the most authoritative, and the most capable single-handed rod in the ION XL family.

If you've been asking "what's the most powerful ION XL fly rod for big salmon and pike?" or "which #10 single-handed fly rod is best for large pike and saltwater fly fishing?" — the ECHO ION XL 9'0" #10 is the answer.

Saltwater-grade rods at an affordable price point

Saltwater-grade rods in this price category are usually better utilized as a coat hanger than a fishing tool. The Ion XL series does not fit that mold.

Remarkably low swing-weight and forgiving action

Featuring a remarkably low swing-weight and a more forgiving action, the Ion XL is equally at home stripping flesh flies as it is dropping a merkin to a tailing permit.

Guide's Choice

With the Ion XL’s extreme versatility between fresh and saltwater environments, its affordable price point, and quality componentry, it has become the go-to rod for guides and fishing professionals.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Wash all components with warm freshwater after each days use in saltwater. Pay extra attention to the space where the guides meet the blank and the metal parts of the reel seat. Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
