One Rod. Every Situation. No Compromises.

The ECHO ION XL 9'0" #6 Fly Rod is the rod that experienced fly fishers reach for when they want one outfit that genuinely does everything well. At just 133g, it is a beautifully balanced premium fly rod that covers the full breadth of freshwater and inshore saltwater fly fishing — from big dry flies on a chalk stream to moderate streamers on a spate river, from stillwater trout on a Scottish loch to sea bass and mullet on an estuary. The #6 line weight is the sweet spot of single-handed fly fishing, and the ION XL delivers it at a standard that matches the most demanding situations you can put it in.

At €379, it is a premium fly rod at a price that makes it genuinely compelling — and a rod that will become the one you reach for most often, whatever the day holds.

Rod Specifications

  • Length: 9'0" / 274cm
  • Line Weight: #6
  • Weight: Approx. 133g
  • Use: Dry fly, nymph, wet fly, streamer fishing, stillwater trout, and inshore saltwater fly fishing

From Big Dries to Moderate Streamers

The ION XL #6 is the rod for the fly fisher who refuses to be pigeonholed. In the morning, it presents a size 12 dry fly on a chalk stream with the delicacy and precision that educated trout demand. In the afternoon, it swings a moderate streamer through the productive lies of a spate river with authority and feel. In the evening, it casts a Clouser Minnow across an estuary for sea bass with the power and accuracy that inshore saltwater fishing requires. It does all of this without compromise — because the ION XL was engineered to be genuinely versatile, not just marketed as such.

UK Rivers & Stillwaters

On the chalk streams of southern England — the Test, the Itchen, the Kennet — the ION XL #6 delivers the precise, delicate presentations that these most demanding of rivers require. On the wild brown trout rivers of Wales, Scotland, and northern England — the Eden, the Wye, the Usk, and the west Highland spate rivers — it handles dry fly, nymph, and wet fly fishing with equal confidence. On the stillwaters of Scotland and Ireland — the great limestone loughs, the Highland lochs, and the reservoir fisheries of England and Wales — the #6 line weight covers the full range of stillwater techniques from dry fly to intermediate line fishing with ease.

Inshore Saltwater — Bass, Mullet & Coastal Species

The ION XL's saltwater credentials are genuine. The #6 line weight handles the full range of inshore saltwater fly fishing on the coasts of the British Isles and Europe — sea bass from estuaries and rocky marks, mullet on surface flies in harbours and tidal rivers, garfish and mackerel from the shore, and the full range of coastal species that make saltwater fly fishing on European coasts so exciting and so varied. At 133g, it is light enough to fish all day on a coastal mark without fatigue, and the action is forgiving enough to handle the wind that coastal fishing inevitably brings.

European Rivers & Lakes

Across Europe, the ION XL #6 is at home on the limestone streams of Austria and Slovenia, the brown trout rivers of Scandinavia, the grayling rivers of the Czech Republic and Poland, and the stillwaters of Scandinavia and the Baltic. Wherever a 9-foot #6 is the right rod — and that covers a remarkable amount of the world's finest fly fishing — the ION XL is the right choice.

If you've been asking "what's the best all-round #6 fly rod for rivers, lakes, and saltwater?" or "which premium single-handed fly rod is most versatile for UK and European fly fishing?" — the ECHO ION XL 9'0" #6 is the answer.

Saltwater-grade rods at an affordable price point

Saltwater-grade rods in this price category are usually better utilized as a coat hanger than a fishing tool. The Ion XL series does not fit that mold.

Remarkably low swing-weight and forgiving action

Featuring a remarkably low swing-weight and a more forgiving action, the Ion XL is equally at home stripping flesh flies as it is dropping a merkin to a tailing permit.

Guide's Choice

With the Ion XL’s extreme versatility between fresh and saltwater environments, its affordable price point, and quality componentry, it has become the go-to rod for guides and fishing professionals.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Wash all components with warm freshwater after each days use in saltwater. Pay extra attention to the space where the guides meet the blank and the metal parts of the reel seat. Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
