The Versatile King. Power and Precision for Europe's Greatest Rivers.

The ECHO King 13'0" #9 Spey Fly Rod is the lighter, more versatile sibling in the King range — and for many European fly fishers, it is the more compelling choice. At #9 and just 232g, it sits in the sweet spot between raw power and refined presentation, giving you the authority to cast large flies and heavy sink tips with ease while retaining the feel and balance that make a long day on the river a pleasure rather than a trial.

Where the #10 King is built for the heaviest huchen flies and the most demanding high-water conditions, the #9 is the rod for the angler who wants the full capability of the King range with a touch more versatility across a wider range of conditions and species. The gloss black blank with red wraps, TiCH low-profile stripping guides, and heavy duty cork grips with composite inserts confirm its premium credentials. At €799, it is ECHO's finest Spey rod in its most versatile configuration.

The Huchen Angler's Choice

The huchen — Hucho hucho — is the apex predator of the Danube system and one of the most coveted fly fishing targets in Europe. The King #9 is the rod that experienced huchen anglers reach for when they want the power to fish large articulated streamers and heavy tube flies across a full day on the Inn, the Salzach, the Enns, the Isar, the Drau, or the Sava — but with the slightly lighter feel that makes the #9 more comfortable to cast through long winter sessions when the fish are deep and the takes are hard-earned.

The TiCH low-profile stripping guides handle the heavy running lines and shooting heads used in huchen fishing with minimal friction, maximising distance and reducing wear across thousands of casts through a season. For huchen anglers who find the #10 a touch heavy for a full day's fishing, the #9 King is the natural answer.

Atlantic Salmon — Norway & Scotland

On the great Norwegian fjord rivers — the Alta, the Gaula, the Namsen — the King #9 is the rod for the biggest beats and the largest flies, with the medium fast action loading Skagit and Scandi heads smoothly and delivering them with authority across wide, powerful pools. On the classic Scottish salmon rivers — the Tay, the Spey, the Dee, the Tweed — the #9 power class handles the heaviest sink tips and largest tube flies that autumn salmon fishing demands, while the 13'0" length gives you the reach to cover the water thoroughly.

Baltic Salmon, Pike & Large Predators

On the great Baltic salmon rivers of Sweden — the Biske, and the Mörrum — and the salmon rivers of Finland, the King #9 delivers the power and line control that big fish and big water demand. On the sea trout rivers of Denmark in high autumn water, it handles the heaviest conditions with authority. For pike anglers targeting large fish on European rivers and lakes with heavy articulated flies, the #9 is a superb choice — powerful enough to cast the largest pike flies, balanced enough to fish all day without fatigue.

Four-Piece Travel Design

The King breaks down into four pieces for easy transport to any European river destination — from the Danube tributaries of Austria and Bavaria to the fjord rivers of Norway and the salmon rivers of Scotland.

Pair it with a Skagit head in the 540–630gr range for maximum versatility with heavy flies and fast-sinking tips across all conditions.

Further Details

Sick of rods that wilt under the strain of a sprinting 40-pound ‘Nook? No more – the King is what you want. Progressive, medium-fast actions compliment the King’s extra-strong backbone to help comfortably lift and chuck massive tips and keep angry fish pinned. The 13 foot length offers the ideal amount of leverage without making tree-shaded areas a snagging nightmare.

Care

Rajeff Sports would like your ECHO experience to be a good one and we ask that you take care of your equipment with the following regular maintenance:

Try to keep sand and dirt out of the ferrules. Occasionally use a few drops of any reel oil or grease on the reel seat threads to keep it operating smoothly. Ski wax can also be used on the ferrules if needed to ensure a proper fit.

Do not use tape on your ferrules.

Action/Power Comparison Chart

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
