The Nymphing Rod Built for the Most Demanding Technique.

The ECHO Shadow X 10'0" #2 Fly Rod is a premium specialist nymphing rod built for the angler who takes their nymphing seriously. At just 73g, it is extraordinarily light for a 10-foot rod — a critical advantage when you are holding the rod at arm's length for hours at a time, maintaining contact with your flies through every drift. The #2 line weight and 10'0" length are the classic configuration for Czech nymphing, tight line nymphing, and competition-style river fishing, and the Shadow X delivers them at a standard that matches the most demanding practitioners of the art.

At €599, it is a serious investment in a serious technique — and for the angler who has discovered what tight line nymphing can do, it is a deeply compelling one.

Important note on line matching: When pairing any ECHO Shadow X nymph rod with a non-specialist nymph line, we recommend uplining — for example, use a #3 line on this #2 rod. This ensures the rod loads correctly and performs at its best with standard fly lines.

Czech Nymphing — The Technique This Rod Was Built For

Czech nymphing — and its close relatives, Polish nymphing, Slovak nymphing, and modern tight line techniques — is the most effective method for fishing weighted nymphs in fast, broken water. The technique relies on direct contact between the angler and the flies at all times, with no fly line on the water and the rod held high to maintain a taut connection through the drift. It demands a rod that is long enough to reach the productive lies without wading too close, light enough to hold at arm's length without fatigue, and sensitive enough to detect the subtlest takes the moment they happen.

The Shadow X #2 was engineered for exactly this. The 10'0" length gives you the reach to fish the most productive lies on medium-sized rivers without disturbing the water. The 73g weight means you can fish all day without your arm giving out. And the sensitivity of the blank transmits every touch, every hesitation, every take directly to your hand — so you never miss a fish that you should have caught.

UK & European Rivers — Trout & Grayling

On the wild brown trout and grayling rivers of the British Isles — the Eden, the Wye, the Usk, the Derbyshire Wye, the Test, and the chalk streams of southern England — the Shadow X #2 is the rod for the angler who wants to fish the nymph with maximum efficiency and minimum disturbance. On the competition rivers of Europe — the limestone streams of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, and Slovenia, where the technique was born and refined — the Shadow X is the rod that serious nymph fishers choose.

For grayling fishing in autumn and winter, when the fish are deep and the takes are subtle, the 10'0" length and #2 sensitivity give you the reach and feel to fish effectively in conditions that defeat shorter, less sensitive rods.

Competition & Technical River Fishing

The Shadow X range is used by competition fly fishers at the highest level — and the #2 is the configuration that experienced competition anglers reach for on the most technical and demanding beats. If you fish competitive fly fishing events, or simply want to fish with the same tools that the best river fly fishers in the world use, the Shadow X #2 is the rod to fish.

If you've been asking "what's the best Czech nymphing rod for trout and grayling?" or "which 10-foot #2 nymph rod is best for tight line nymphing on UK and European rivers?" — the ECHO Shadow X 10'0" #2 is the answer.

For Elite Competition-Level Anglers

ECHO worked with veteran Euro Nymph guru Pete Erickson, 2018 fly fishing world champion Norm Maktima, and expert Mariusz Wrobewski (professor of engiteering Berkley University) to create a rod that is dialed-in to perform at the sport’s highest levels.

20% Lighter than the Shadow II Series

By using the most advanced high modulus graphite available to them, ECHO were able to achieve the lightest rod they have ever produced.  When you need to feel every nuance happening under the water, having the lightest, most sensitive rod you possibly can is the difference between 1st and 10th place.

ECHO's Most Advanced Rods to Date

Simply put:  This is the most challenging project Tim Rajeff and his crew at ECHO have ever completed. They designed a rod that balances sensitivity with hook setting capability to a level that had not before thought possible.

Action/Power Explained

Action vs Power Comparison

The Action vs. Power matrix is used for comparison between ECHO rod models. Utilizing this chart, you’ll be able to choose an ECHO rod that best fits you and your personal casting stroke. The vertical axis indicates the rod’s power, while the horizontal axis indicates the rod’s action. In simple terms, single-hand rod action is derived from the top half of the rod, while power is derived from the bottom half.

Action:
Fast action rods feature softer tips than medium action rods and provide a ‘stiffer’ feel. Fast action rods excel in the hands of anglers with more aggressive casting strokes and greater stroke control. Medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger ‘sweet spot’ for a wider range of casting strokes. Consistently throwing a tailing loop? Your rod’s action may not be a good fit to you and your casting stroke.

Power:
A rod’s power is its resistance to flexing under load. Powerful rods are ‘beefier’ through the bottom half, generate higher line speeds, and are more adept at keeping big fish pinned. Delicate rods are more presentation-oriented, protect light tippet, and are a better choice for picky fish.
