Fluorocarbon tippet divides opinion among fly anglers. Some swear by it, some barely use it. But when you are fishing clear water — chalk streams, gin-clear Alpine rivers, low summer salmon pools, or coastal saltwater — and the fish can see everything, the right tippet material genuinely makes a difference.

The OPST Mega Strong Fluorocarbon Tippet is built for exactly those moments. Near-invisible underwater, abrasion-resistant, and with a breaking strain that earns its name, it is the tippet you reach for when clarity demands something better than standard mono.

Why Fluorocarbon?

Fluorocarbon has a refractive index very close to that of water, which means it virtually disappears when submerged. On clear chalk streams, gin-clear Alpine rivers, or low summer salmon pools where fish are leader-shy, that near-invisibility can be the difference between a take and a refusal. It also sinks faster than nylon, which is an advantage for nymphing and subsurface presentations, and it is significantly more abrasion-resistant than standard mono — important when fishing around rocks, gravel, and woody debris.

Fluorocarbon or Mono?

Both materials have their place, and the right choice depends on the water you are fishing and the species you are targeting.

Choose Mega Strong Fluorocarbon when: you are fishing clear chalk streams, gin-clear Alpine rivers, or coastal saltwater where near-invisibility underwater is the priority. Fluorocarbon sinks faster, which is an advantage for nymphing and subsurface presentations, and its abrasion resistance is excellent in rocky environments. It is the preferred choice for clear-water trout and grayling fishing and for coastal sea bass and sea trout fishing where leader visibility is a genuine concern.

Choose Mega Strong Mono when: you are fishing peaty or sandy-coloured rivers for salmon and sea trout — the mono's Stealth Brown colour blends naturally into tannin-stained water where clear fluorocarbon can actually be more conspicuous. Mono is also more supple, knots more easily and more reliably, and has a degree of controlled stretch that can work in your favour when playing powerful fish on lighter tippets. It is the preferred choice for many experienced salmon and sea trout anglers fishing coloured Scandinavian and Baltic rivers.

What Makes OPST Mega Strong Different?

The clue is in the name. OPST have built this fluorocarbon to be genuinely strong for its diameter — not just on paper, but in the knot. Fluorocarbon can be unforgiving if your knots are not up to scratch, but the Mega Strong's consistent diameter and supple construction make it easier to tie reliable knots that hold under pressure. Each spool contains 30 metres — enough for a full season of tippet changes without constantly reaching for a new spool.

Which Strength Should You Choose?

  • 8lb (0.235mm) — ideal for dry fly fishing with smaller patterns on clear rivers; excellent for selective wild brown trout and grayling on chalk streams and Alpine waters
  • 10lb (0.260mm) — a versatile all-round choice for dry fly and nymph fishing; works well for trout and grayling across most European river types
  • 12lb (0.285mm) — the go-to for nymphing, streamer fishing, and situations where you need more insurance; good for sea trout in clear conditions
  • 16lb (0.330mm) — suited to salmon fishing in low, clear water where a finer tippet is needed but strength cannot be compromised
  • 18lb (0.370mm) — a strong all-round salmon tippet for varied conditions, from spate rivers to Scandinavian beats
  • 20lb (0.405mm) — maximum strength for big salmon, pike, or heavy streamer fishing where abrasion resistance is paramount

Where Does Fluorocarbon Excel?

  • Coastal saltwater fly fishing — near-invisible in clear saltwater; the preferred tippet material for sea bass, pollack, and coastal species along European Atlantic and North Sea coastlines
  • Chalk streams — where crystal-clear water and selective trout demand near-invisible presentation
  • Alpine and mountain streams — where gin-clear water makes leader visibility a real concern
  • Low summer salmon pools — where leader-shy fish need a finer, less visible connection in clear conditions
  • Grayling fishing — particularly on clear Central European rivers where grayling are notoriously leader-aware
  • Rocky spate rivers — where abrasion resistance protects your tippet from sharp stones and gravel

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the OPST Mega Strong Fluorocarbon Tippet?

The OPST Mega Strong Fluorocarbon Tippet is a 100% fluorocarbon tippet material available in six strengths from 8lb to 20lb on 30m spools. Near-invisible underwater, abrasion-resistant, and with a low-stretch construction, it is designed for clear-water fishing situations where leader visibility is a genuine concern — chalk streams, Alpine rivers, low summer salmon pools, and coastal saltwater.

How does the fluorocarbon compare to the OPST Mega Strong Mono?

The fluorocarbon is near-invisible underwater and sinks faster — the better choice for clear chalk streams and gin-clear Alpine rivers where underwater visibility is the priority. The mono comes in Stealth Brown and is more supple, knots more easily, and blends naturally into peaty and tannin-stained rivers — making it the preferred choice for salmon and sea trout fishing on coloured Scandinavian, Baltic, and Scottish rivers. Both share the same strength range and spool length; the choice comes down to the water you are fishing.

Is fluorocarbon better than nylon for dry fly fishing?

It depends on the situation. Fluorocarbon sinks more readily than nylon, which can be a disadvantage for dry fly fishing on the surface film. For subsurface presentations — nymphs, wet flies, streamers — fluorocarbon is generally superior. For dry fly work, many anglers use a nylon leader with a short fluorocarbon tippet section as a compromise.

Does fluorocarbon really disappear underwater?

Not completely, but its refractive index is much closer to water than nylon, making it significantly less visible. In clear water conditions, this can make a meaningful difference to wary fish.

How do I tie knots in fluorocarbon?

Fluorocarbon requires well-lubricated knots — always wet the knot before tightening. A clinch knot, improved clinch, or Davy knot all work well. Avoid knots that create sharp angles in the material. If you find fluorocarbon knots frustrating, the OPST Mega Strong Mono is worth considering — its silicone-infused construction makes it significantly more forgiving in the knot.

Is the OPST Mega Strong Fluorocarbon Tippet available with worldwide shipping?

Yes — available from Balticflyfisher with worldwide shipping across Europe and beyond.

Further Product Details

After struggling with soggy tippet spool labels for years, OPST realized that there was a gaping hole in the tippet spool market: waterproof labels. We set out to right this sad state of affairs. Not only are OPST's fluorocarbon spool labels waterproof, but the tippet itself is strong. The OPST fluorocarbon comes in 8, 10, 12, 16, 18 and 20 pound test and comes with convenient elastic bands to keep the tippet in check. 30 meters per spool. The diameters are:
