OPST DD6 Micro Skagit D2 T6 Tips are 8ft (2.4m) dual density sink tips designed for lightweight single-handed rods in micro Skagit configurations. The lighter T6 material makes them the ideal choice for 3–5 weight rods and smaller flies where the heavier T8 tips would be too much. Available in three configurations — full sink, 6ft sink/2ft float, and 4ft sink/4ft float — they give you precise control over fly depth and presentation on the most technical European trout and grayling waters.

T6 vs T8 — What Is the Difference?

T6 and T8 refer to the mass of the tip material, not the sink rate. T6 tips are lighter in mass, making them better matched to lighter rods (3–5 weight) and smaller flies — the lighter mass turns over delicate patterns more cleanly and loads lighter rods more naturally. T8 tips have more mass, providing the weight needed to turn over larger, heavier flies on heavier rods. Choose T6 when fishing lightweight tackle and smaller patterns on small to medium European rivers; choose T8 when fishing heavier rods or larger flies.

What Are D2 (Dual Density) Sink Tips?

D2 tips combine two different densities within a single tip — a sinking section and a floating section — to give you more control over fly depth and presentation than a standard full-sink tip. The floating section aids turnover and mending whilst the sinking section gets your fly down to the required depth. This makes D2 tips more versatile than single-density tips across varying water depths and current speeds.

Which Configuration Should I Choose?

DD6-1: 8ft Full Sink

The entire 8ft (2.4m) length sinks at T6 density. For medium-depth pools and moderate currents with lightweight tackle. Ideal for turning over small to medium streamers and nymphs on 3–5 weight rods.

DD6-2: 6ft Sink / 2ft Float

Six feet of T6 sinking line with a 2ft floating section at the head end. The most versatile configuration for varied European river conditions — gets your fly down to mid-depth whilst the floating section aids turnover and mending. The recommended starting point if you are buying one tip.

DD6-3: 4ft Sink / 4ft Float

Four feet of T6 sinking line with a 4ft floating section. For shallow water, clear conditions, and spooky fish. Ideal for swinging flies just beneath the surface on small streams and in low, clear summer water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are OPST DD6 D2 T6 tips?

OPST DD6 D2 T6 tips are 8ft (2.4m) dual density sink tips for lightweight single-handed rods in micro Skagit configurations. Built from T6 high-density material and available in three configurations — full sink, 6ft sink/2ft float, and 4ft sink/4ft float — they are designed for 3–5 weight rods and smaller flies on technical European trout and grayling waters.

What is the difference between T6 and T8 tips?

T6 and T8 refer to the mass of the tip material, not the sink rate. T6 is lighter in mass — better matched to lighter rods (3–5 weight) and smaller flies where the heavier T8 would overload the rod or turn over too aggressively. T8 has more mass, providing the weight needed to turn over larger, heavier flies on heavier rods. Choose T6 for lightweight tackle and smaller patterns; choose T8 for heavier rods or larger flies.

What does D2 (Dual Density) mean?

D2 means the tip combines two different densities within a single tip — a sinking section and a floating section. Unlike a standard full-sink tip, a D2 tip gives you more control over fly depth and presentation. The floating section aids turnover and mending whilst the sinking section gets your fly down to the required depth.

What is the difference between the three DD6 configurations?

The DD6-1 (full sink) is for consistent depth throughout the tip in medium-depth pools and moderate currents. The DD6-2 (6ft sink/2ft float) is the most versatile all-round choice for typical European river conditions. The DD6-3 (4ft sink/4ft float) is for shallow water, clear conditions, and spooky fish. Many anglers carry all three to cover the full range of conditions throughout the season.

How do the DD6 tips compare to the DD8 tips?

The DD6 tips use T6 material (lighter mass) and are designed for 3–5 weight rods and smaller flies. The DD8 tips use T8 material (heavier mass) and are designed for heavier rods and larger flies. Both are available in the same three dual density configurations. Choose DD6 for lightweight tackle and delicate presentations; choose DD8 when fishing heavier rods or larger flies.

Are OPST DD6 tips available with worldwide shipping?

Yes — OPST DD6 Micro Skagit D2 T6 tips are available from Balticflyfisher with worldwide shipping. OPST products are manufactured to exacting standards and are the benchmark for micro Skagit fishing systems worldwide.

OPST Micro D2 Tips

OPST's innovative dual density tips are 8ft Tips that incorporate varying ratios of floating and sinking materials, including options such as a full sink, 4-foot float with 4-foot sink, and a 6-foot sink with a 2-foot float. This versatility enhances performance at all casting angles, ensures rapid sinking to optimal fishing depths, and provides superior control over fly depth. Ideal for targeting structured environments in rivers, such as boulder gardens and cut banks, these tips facilitate efficient depth management.

Each tip is marked with a line ID at the rear, while the corresponding heads feature an ID at the front, allowing for quick identification of connections. Additionally, both ends of our heads and tips are equipped with robust welded loops for seamless rigging.

OPST Line and Tip Recommendation Charts

Commando Heads are shorter, more dense, and have a larger diameter than other skagit lines. Because of their very short length, a much higher proportion of the total line/head length is on the surface of the water in the back-cast, D- or V-Loop, thus providing more line adehsion. This enables you to use a much lighter grain/gram weight when compared to longer skagit heads. As a rule of thumb you can drop the line weight by appx. 5/6 Grams or 75/90 grains when moving to a commando system. Please do not pair OPST lines based on rod manufacturer grain windows, unless it  specified for Commando Heads.
